I have experienced multimedia instruction both as a student and a teacher. From both perspectives, I've determined that educational multimedia is the key to effective instruction.

As a student, educational multimedia has allowed me to understand topics and concepts that I may not have grasped without the use of pictures, videos, diagrams, audio, and other forms of media. Well-designed educational multimedia can make the difference between ineffective and effective instruction.

As a teacher, I have seen students more engaged and willing to learn when provided with a combination of verbal and nonverbal elements. I find that animations, for example, are great when used to supplement lessons. Animations are highly visual, often providing students with a combination of images, diagrams, etc. However, they also incorporate verbal elements, such as narration and textual information in moderation. This mixture of media engages students in ways that one single form of media cannot.

Although I understood the significance of multimedia instruction prior to this course, EME 3319 provided me with an understanding of why multimedia works. After completing this course, I understand that instruction can benefit from a combination of media, as long as those multimedia elements are designed effectively. To prevent cognitive overload and to effectively teach students, multimedia instruction must take into account the different principles of design: signal vs. noise ratio, picture superiority effect, empty space, contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. I can apply these principles to any design I create in the future. As a current educator and an aspiring curriculum developer and instructional designer, I expect to use these design principles in many aspects of my career.
