This timeline provides a detailed history of the five generations of distance education: correspondence, broadcast radio & television, open universities, teleconferencing, and the internet. To create this interactive timeline, I utilized a program called Sutori. I have included dates, descriptions, images, links, and videos that I believe illustrate each unique generation of distance education.

This was my first attempt using a timeline maker like Sutori. After completing this assignment, I am looking forward to utilizing Sutori in my future classrooms. For this project, I had the ability to include images, videos, links, and videos in my timeline. Sutori also allows you to include audio recordings, quiz questions, "Did you know?" facts, and comments under each textbox. I am excited to use this with students because my students will be able to make their own comments on each section of the timeline!

Creating this timeline has also allowed me to delve deeper into the meaning of "distance education." In the 21st century, distance education is often equated to online learning. However, distance education has existed since the 19th century—way before the internet was created. After designing this timeline, I believe I have a solidified understanding of the historical progression of distance education.

In my design, I incorporated statistics and facts that I believe will help others visualize the wide scope of distance education. Using statistical information in this poster also helped me understand the significant role that distance education plays in the United States. Distance education gives high school students, college students, members of the military, and professionals (including nurses, doctors, lawyers, etc.) access to education.

Regarding the format of this project, I enjoy having the ability to present information visually. For visual learners, these assignments can be very beneficial. In my future classrooms, I intend to incorporate hands-on projects that allow students to visualize the information they are learning.
