Classroom Lesson: Grade 2 Language

This online lesson was created using Google Classroom.

First, I introduced my students to Google Classroom.

Then, I created a topic for this specific Language lesson: Sentences and Punctuations. In this topic, I uploaded a video to introduce my students to the lesson content.

I incorporated a variety of educational materials into this lesson, such as images, games, and videos.

Finally, I gave my students two assignments.

The first assignment is a short quiz that goes over the material presented in the lesson. The final assignment is a journal activity that can be completed using Google Docs.

I found that creating a Google Classroom lesson is surprisingly easy. I was able to include a variety of materials and assignments to create a well-rounded online lesson. My lesson was geared toward the 2nd grade level. I imagine that this lesson would be used as a supplemental resource for students who also attend school in-person. The lesson itself reviews topics covered in class and provides students with videos, games, and pictures to use as supplemental resources. If I were using this Google Classroom with actual students, I would use it to assign materials and assignments as extra practice and homework.

Web-based learning has many advantages. Students can work and collaborate with other students from anywhere. Web-based learning also makes communication between teachers and students very convenient. Incorporating online games and videos through web-based learning also helps keep students interested and engaged in lessons. However, not everyone has access to a computer or the internet at home. Another disadvantage might be that web-based learning can be difficult for younger students. Even I had trouble keeping my online lesson appropriate to the 2nd grade level. Creating an online lesson that 2nd graders would be able to read and understand was challenging enough, so it might not be possible to use Google Classroom for younger elementary students, unless their parents are guiding them through the whole process.

To increase teaching and social presence in online learning, I would include videos of myself teaching and reviewing the class material, like the introduction video for this sample lesson. When I was creating this Google Classroom lesson, I noticed a feature that allows students to comment on the lesson updates. I would encourage students to comment on my posts, assignments, and materials to increase communication. Without communication, web-based learning can feel very distant and detached. I would try to counteract this by facilitating conversation as much as possible.
