"King, the Kindest"

A children's story about dogs, friendship, and the importance of kindness

This storybook was created using Storyjumper.com.

Rationale

This is a children's storybook called "King, the Kindest," inspired by my own dog named King. This story is about a chihuahua who feels different than all of the other dogs because he isn't as big, fast, or strong as them. In the end, he learns that he is unique in his own ways, and it doesn't matter if he isn't exactly like everybody else.

I wrote this story because I work in a school with elementary-aged children; I think the message in this story is an important message for all kids to learn. Being different is not a bad thing. Instead, it makes us special.

Reflection

Before completing this assignment, I did not realize how easy it can be to create a digital storybook. Websites like storyjumper.com can be extremely useful to teachers and other educational professionals who work with children. I can also imagine this program being utilized by students in classrooms. It would be interesting to teach kids how to make their own imaginative stories using digital tools.

"The Adventures of King the Chihuahua"

A movie about a dog's daily adventures

This video was edited using Final Cut Pro X.

Rationale

This digital story is a video I created using Final Cut Pro. This story isn't necessarily aimed toward children, but I think children would enjoy it, as well as any average dog-lover. I used various clips of my dog and created a simple story centered around his daily adventures. The video features "the adventurous Chihuahua," King, and includes a background audio track that I think fits well with the story. In this story, the video and audio work together to tell the story, more-so than the text itself. I wanted to make a video that was different than the storybook I made, so I limited the text and focused on digital aspects such as timing and visual filters.
